Samuel M. Funk, Ph.D.
Dr. Sam Funk is the CEO/Managing Member and Executive Economist with AgServe, LLC. Sam has extensive experience in farm and agribusiness management, ag policy, and as a consultant providing applied research and economic analysis for farms and Fortune 500 companies. Sam has provided leadership within Land Grant University, farm organization, and agribusiness settings in multiple roles – including that of farmer.
Dr. Funk earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Kansas State University. Sam also holds an M.S. in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University, and B.S. in Agricultural Economics and Minor in Animal Science from the University of Missouri. With numerous academic honors and awards to his credit, Dr. Funk established himself as a top analyst in the areas of data analysis, production, farm management, policy, business structure, and technology change. His training includes advanced course work in Economics, Management, International Trade, Statistics, Policy, and the Physical/Life Sciences.
Dr. Funk served as the Chief Economist for the United Soybean Board (USB). He also provided an additional strategic function for the USB coordinating input for the Domestic Opportunities Target Area as Staff Lead during his tenure with the national soybean checkoff organization. In this role Sam promoted greater understanding of program areas across the USB for Directors to consider the organization's overall strategic investment portfolio.
Leading the special projects and consulting efforts with Doane Advisory Services, Sam was Senior Economist with the market advisory firm. Within the Land Grant University system, Sam served as the Administrator of the Kansas Farm Management Association Program (KFMA) at Kansas State University. There he maintained an applied research and outreach program in farm management and agriculture policy as a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural Economics. Sam has also been an economist with the Illinois Farm Bureau and established an award-winning farm management Extension program with the University of Missouri.
Sam has presented testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture, Subcommittee on General Farm Committees and Risk Management in their preparation for the Farm Bill and in regard to aggressive energy price responses following hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. He has been a featured speaker on the topic of Biotechnology for such groups as the American Seed Trade Association and the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA, formerly the American Agricultural Economics Association).
